Branching Out: Trees as Art at the Peabody Essex Museum

The newest exhibition at the Peabody Essex Museum opens on September 27th at the Art & Nature Center. The theme: nature as art. One piece, "Waltzers" by Joseph Wheelwright, is made entirely of pine roots.

Another, by James Balog, is a 93-inch-tall composite photo made from 400 images of a 242-foot giant sequoia in Sierra Nevada, California. The images were taken while Balog was descending a tree nearby. A unique piece by artist David Yann Robert involved him recording a beech tree's bioelectrical signals. He then constructed an image out of the activity he recorded, and finished by capturing the process on video. The exhibit is meant to explore the ways in which trees inspire us as artists, and the ways in which we can use them as a medium.

Visit the Peabody Essex Museum to witness all of this and more, starting on September 27th.
