LDa designed the new constructed home for a single family in Newton, Massachusetts.

The young family of five sought a home that would support their strong commitment to sustainable living and offer more autonomy and mobility for their middle child and her electric wheelchair.

The home’s exterior references the Shingle-style vernacular common in the neighborhood. A ramped farmer’s porch connects the detached garage to the main entry, mudroom and screened porch, while also providing covered play and gathering space.

The home’s interior was designed with incredible details to support accessibility.

Along with wide passages and zero-step transitions, a central elevator connects the three-floor home.

Every bathroom in the home was universally-designed for accessibility. All of the bathroom walls have blocking added between the studs that will allow future installation of grab bars and other assistive devices.

One bedroom has ceiling framing that supports a bed-to-bathroom lift system.

The mudroom has an automatic door opening and a wheelchair charging station, while an exterior faucet on the porch facilitates wheel cleaning.

LDa worked closely with the homeowners and all design team members to ensure that sustainable features were integral to the home’s design.
