A reproduction of Jefferson's Monticello in Somers, CT

LaPlante Construction of Longmeadow, Massachusetts is in the final week of constructing an architecturally accurate modern reproduction of Thomas Jefferson's famous Monticello home. The home, which was designed using both modern green building techniques and historical accents, was commissioned by Mr. Prestly Blake, co-founder of Friendly's and local celebrity.

The idea and inspiration for creating the modern reproduction was all Blake's own, and began when he brought a giant portfolio full of photos and books on Jefferson and his famed Monticello plantation to LaPlante Construction. Mr. Blake, now one week away from his 100th birthday, wants to complete this last big project.

The experience has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for LaPlante Construction, and they have loved working on this building with Mr. Blake for the past few months. Some aspects of the construction have been challenging, such as creating the appearance of a single floor from the front exterior, but the final result will be incredibly rewarding for both the firm and for Mr. Blake. Ray and Bill LaPlante, founder and president of LaPlante Construction, have taken on the role of architect for the project- by working with original documentation and with Monticello's official historian, they were able to re-create the architecture in an environmentally sustainable way suitable for modern living.

Mr. Blake reportedly asked his doctor on a recent visit, "How long am I going to live for?" The answer: 104. Mr. Blake is looking forward to completing this project and hopes to enjoy a few years in his dream home.
