A Custom Cape Home for the Generations

How do you transform small 1950-style Cape into a spacious, airy vacation home for current and future generations? Sometimes the best thing to do is simply to start over.

Working with D. Michael Collins Architects, Encore Construction oversaw the demolition of the old Cape and constructed a gracious 5,500 square foot farmhouse style home in its place. The clients wanted to create a legacy home -- a treasured family vacation spot for the couple and their four boys that could be enjoyed by future generations as well.

The home features large communal gathering places such as a spacious kitchen, family room and screened porch, as well as private bathrooms for each of the five bedrooms. Vintage and farmhouse-inspired features give the home a relaxed ambiance while strong colors and unique accents imbue it with personality.

Massachusetts architect D. Michael Collins specified fun features such as punched tin in the base kitchen cabinets, sliding interior barn doors, wide pine wainscoting and a wood ceiling in the family room. The accents harken back to a 1930s Cape Cod family homestead.

Encore had worked with the homeowners previously when the firm remodeled their MetroWest home. Dale Nikula, President of Encore Construction, says the Encore staff was delighted to have the opportunity to work with the homeowners again and partner with Michael Collins on such a unique project.

Susan Gerlach, Encore's designer on the project, comments: "It's so much fun to work with the homeowners! They are really open to different ideas and using materials in new ways."
