Glorious Gardens: Suburban Outdoor Oasis
Landscape Architecture by Timothy Lee Landscape Design
A garden needn’t be as expansive as the Tuileries Garden to be a restorative and calming Eden. Sometimes a small sparkling oasis that is all your own becomes your place in the sun, and it’s made all the more charming by its scale. Timothy Lee of Timothy Lee Landscape Design created just such a space in a historic Boston suburb where a hardworking client and his two children can relax and share family time and “just disappear for a few days.”
Because the homeowner is fond of Maine and Cape Cod, Lee channeled a coastal sensibility into his design of a private outdoor terrace and oversized custom hot tub that doubles as a swimming pool for the kids. Lee paved the terrace with rustic native granite cobbles and used a fieldstone veneer and bluestone cap for the tub. He then surrounded the spa with ornamental grasses and perennials that elicit a relaxed and beachy feel.
For privacy and to be accessible to the home, Lee tucked the hot tub into a planting further afield from the rest of the garden. He then planted evergreen trees and shrubs as screens to make the outdoor space even more secluded and included a dogwood tree for seasonal interest.
