Dedham Divots

Golf? Check. Pool? Check. Fire pit? Check. Meyer & Meyer Architecture & Interiors proves you needn’t drive to a second home to experience the highlights of the season. For a client with a home nestled by the tenth hole of a lauded country and polo club, the team only had to look as far as the backyard to conjure a vacation-style atmosphere.

As the family is comprised of champion golfers, they sought to create an outbuilding that could house an HD golf simulator, where the players could work on their swings year-round. As they knew an addition would be necessary to outfit the high-tech toy, the homeowners took the opportunity to create a new pool house with plenty of space for entertaining and a guest suite. An “entertainment barn” was born.

The outbuilding’s rustic bearing is in keeping with its recreational mission yet it complements the refined style of the main home. While the golf simulator serves as the hinge of the design, the compound offers a host of amenities. The barn overlooks a pool with an infinity edge, a whirlpool and a fire pit and has plenty of seating on deck. An L-shaped pergola and gazebo links the new structure with the existing one, bringing both continuity and a privacy screen, and positioning the pool and fairway views to best advantage.

During inclement weather and cooler months, the barn itself ensures that residents and guests can take the party inside. The handsome structure features a kitchen, first floor guest bedroom and ensuite, a loft bedroom, as well as an inviting dining area with a double-sided fireplace situated so that its flames can also be seen outside.

The barn is blessed with plenty of room for entertaining, and spectator seating surrounds the golf simulator on three sides, allowing everyone to get in the game. Best of all? Depression won’t start to sink in come September, because the fun doesn’t end come Labor Day.
