Ever since, de la Renta's name has been synonymous with glamour and high fashion, and he has dressed some of Hollywood's most famous celebrities, including Penelope Cruz, Sarah Jessica Parker, Emma Watson, and Jennifer Lawrence.

Hollywood isn't the only city whose women loved de la Renta's dresses. Our nation's First Ladies were also frequent commissioners of Oscar de la Renta's work, including Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama.

Oscar de la Renta was born in the Dominican Republic to a powerful and wealthy family before moving to Spain to study under Cristobal Balenciaga. He then relocated again to Paris, to work at Lanvin and then Balmain. In 1965, he moved to New York and created his label.
"The only realities in life are that you are born, and that you die," de la Renta told a New York audience last June at the "Fashion Talks" series. "We always think we are going to live forever. The dying aspect we will never accept. The one thing about having this kind of warning is how you appreciate every single day of life."
De La Renta leaves behind his second wife, Annette Engelhard Reed, and their son. His first wife Francoise de Langlade died in 1983.
