Wallpaper: Instant Gratification

Shopping for wallpaper

Nothing gives a room a lift quite like wallpaper. Wallpaper transforms a space almost immediately, casting a mood of elegance, warmth, vibrance or all of the above. It is also as forgiving as it is attractive, and can mask imperfections. Most of all, it brings a fresh look and great satisfaction.

In-store design pros Sandy Krenz at Debsan The Decorating Store and Sarah Winroth and Sarah Melnick of Wayland Home and Design tell us that many of their customers are still a little leery of fully embracing wallpaper, but we can attest that there’s nothing to fear. Not when you have in-store design teams like these to help you navigate the many styles and options available to you.

We spent some time at both neighborhood stores, and learned that both Debsan the Decorating Store in Natick and Wayland Home and Design carry a huge number of wallpapers by coveted designers available to the trade, making a trip to the Design Center unnecessary.

L-R: Scion for Zoffany, Taimi; Phillip Jeffries Turquoise Bermuda Hemp; Cole & Son Royal Garden

At Debsan, Krenz showed us classic styles recolored for this season by Cole & Son, Harlequin’s papers with glass beading, Scion for Zoffany’s graphics (“today’s answer to Marimekko”), masterful murals and Phillip Jeffries’ gorgeous grasscloths, hemps and raffia. She suggested that customers who are a bit unsure start with an accent wall or a powder room to get their feet wet.

L-R: Farrow & Ball Bee; Quadrille's China Seas Sigourney collection; Anna French for Thibaut

At Wayland Home and Design, we saw Farrow & Ball’s popular Bee wall covering, Quadrille’s China Seas florals and geometrics in Jordan almond colors and Anna French for Thibaut’s classic designs with grand details like flocking (i.e. raised particles) and metallic foils.

Both stores allow customers to take home a wallpaper book to flip through at your leisure and they’re happy to order samples. There’s no better time to pour yourself a cup of tea and browse through the beautiful patterns, textures and colorways that could be yours.

PRO TIPS:

Paper the bedroom wall behind your upholstered headboard in a splashy print or sumptuous color. Then pair it with simple bedding.  —Sandy Krenz, Debsan The Decorating Store

Grasscloth has a great feel and texture and is a great option for those who prefer an understated look but don’t want paint.  —Sarah Melnick, Wayland Home and Design
