This uniquely beautiful Vermont residence designed by MGa | Marcus Gleysteen Architects is one of winning projects of the 2013 Marvin Architect’s Challenge. Marvin Windows and Doors hosted the challenge to find the best projects that feature their products with solution-driven design, innovation, classic beauty, and sustainability.
MGa | Marcus Gleysteen Architects designed this rustic modern mountain retreat to take full advantage of its mountain surroundings. The primary living spaces of this home are located on the upper level and provide access to the greatest light, air and views of the landscape. Throughout the home, large expanses of glass and carefully designed view corridors provide visual connection to the forest and mountains beyond.
The home serves a family who enjoy informal gatherings, and its complex overlapping spaces encourage interaction and togetherness. The kitchen and the great room are the central spaces of the house.
The kitchen and great room are linked by a double-sided opened granite fireplace and chimney, and an over-looking loft on the second floor.
The family orbits around the nucleus of the kitchen, which is on axis with the chimney, the covered porch, and the ridgeline of the roof. Its view aligns with a view corridor through the woods to the ski trails beyond.
Complementing the various gathering spaces, the design also accommodates necessary private areas with their over reflective and unique details. The location of the soaking tub in the corner window of the master bathroom, fully embraces the vantage point of the view.
The scope of work took full advantage of local craftsmen. Their skill can be seen in the custom furniture, handrails, brackets, balustrades, stonework, timberframe and myriad of other details throughout the home. The design embraces the materials, methods anda forms of the culture and history of Vermont, but with a definitive crisp, modern twist.
