High-gloss surfaces, deep navy blues, starched whites, colorful flags. We can almost taste the Veuve Clicquot. We spotlight high-end living spaces that cast a maritime tone—in architecture, finishes and accents or all of the above.
Kotzen Interiors
Kotzen Interiors' handsome sitting area in Chatham, designed by principal Barbara Kotzen, has us yearning to breathe in salt air. Shiplap (what else?) overhead, deep wood underfoot and a waterside vantage provides the perfect backdrop for a vintage model sailboat atop a treasured chest. Striped navy chairs with pillows reminiscent of nautical flags provide the perfect finish.
Wetstone Design and Millwork
In this fine, finished foyer, Wetstone Design and Millwork’s handiwork brings the America’s Cup into the home. Stained quarter sawn sapele mahogany contrasts beautifully against the bright white painted maple, while a cubby packed with nautical flags, a starry, blue rug and a porthole window above a yacht-like bench seating complete the effect.
Donna Elle
Interior designer Donne Elle of Donna Elle Interiors has mastered the art of beach house styling, and this scene from a chic island retreat doesn’t disappoint. Here, swashbuckling buoys and fish decoys are offset by clean-lined board and batten squares, and anchored by a ruddy, driftwood feature. We love the interplay of the rustic and the shipshape!

Conceived by Nicholaeff Architecture + Design, this impressive office is sea-minded and sensational. With its teak and holly plank flooring, blue Venetian plaster ceiling and a ship’s ladder that ascends to the roof deck, there’s no question this is the captain’s quarters. Custom white leather chairs, and an antique hanging ship light make this a favorite port of call.
Paul Weber Architect
Martha’s Vineyard West Chop Club, designed by Paul Weber Architect, ensures that guests receive a warm welcome. Instead of singing the blues, this Vineyard Haven club punched up this portal with hot coral tones in the painted door, light fixture and accessories. A nautical star compass emblazoned within the floor’s woodwork tells all who enter they’ve come to the right place.
