A grand Chestnut Hill residence is revived for 21st century living.
In the heart of Chestnut Hill, atop one of its many prominent hillsides, hails a stately Greek revival that once bore the marks of time. Only through extensive renovation and restoration efforts at the hands of New England Design and Construction (NEDC), in collaboration with Eric Dare Design, could the home's true potential be realized.
“There were some well-designed spaces in the bones of the home,” says David Supple, CEO of NEDC. With its grand scale, sky high ceilings, and rich architectural details, the home caught the eye of its future homeowners, who were up for the challenge of restoring it to 21st century standards. “They were pretty adventurous,” Supple says of the couple, who envisioned a fusion of historic allure and contemporary appeal—right up the alley for NEDC, a Boston-based boutique Architectural Design/Build firm specializing in architecture, interior design, and artisan building.
On the exterior, the house was rejuvenated with historically accurate shutters that adorn a freshly painted facade. A new deck, designed in the image of its predecessor, spans the rear of the home. “The design for the deck was really based on restoring what was once there,” Supple shares. The front entry was also restored to retain its elegant layers of Greek, Roman, and Colonial Revival arches and columns. “Restoring the entry was a way to display the original architect’s skill set and ability to utilize the classical vocabulary to create a unique space,” he explains.
Inside, once congealed spaces gave way to fluidity, as structural tweaks offered more accessibility between the dining room, butler's pantry, and kitchen. Modern amenities such as en-suite bathrooms were also added, and architectural details and millwork gained new life throughout the home.
“We retained a great majority of the moldings,” Supple recounts. “If we did modify, we milled to match what was existing.”
Bridging the gap between then and now, the restoration efforts breathed new life into every corner of the residence. The ballroom, with its soaring ceilings and restored features, stands as a majestic centerpiece, while second-floor bedrooms offer panoramic views of the community beyond. “If you look at where this property is situated, it is there for the community to behold,” says Supple. Placed into NEDC's care, the home emerges revived and resplendent, and serves as a marvel to admire from near and far.
